Our clients loved traditional decor, but they also craved a laid-back, coastal lifestyle. So, we combined the best of both worlds! By merging classic design elements with stylish, coastal accents, we created a one-of-a-kind space that’s perfect for relaxing and entertaining.
The Power of Successful Design
What makes it all worth it? Successful design plans create an important bridge from existing room layout, finishes and furnishings to what clients envision. Think of it as the roadmap to making their dreams a reality! The goal with any project is to pave the way to a final reveal that delivers everything a client is planning for.

Bringing it All Together
A Modern Coastal Dining Room Retreat to Love
I’ve lived on both the East and West coasts, so my life generally revolves around a coastal mindset. And even though this renovated home is in California, the design theme works well just about anywhere. Happily, the coastal style is incredibly popular, thanks to its timelessness and the sensory-filled connection to nature.
This vibe, seen in the Coastal Granddaughter aesthetic is beautifully captured by Nancy Meyers, the popular movie director and producer, in movies like “Something’s Gotta Give” and “It’s Complicated.”
With a bit of thoughtful planning, you can transform your dining room into a timeless, uplifting coastal retreat you’ll love. Check out these coastal dining room ideas to bring that serene seaside experience into your dining space.

Modern Coastal Dining Room: Function in Your Space
Functionality Checklist:
- Open Floor Concept: For this project, we considered an open floor concept that included removing a load-bearing wall, which was ideal given the home’s existing quiet spaces.
- Quiet Spaces: Make sure you have areas for work, relaxation or other activities. This home has plenty of quiet spaces, including two oversized work-from-home offices.
- Outdoor Access: Maximize your backyard oasis by looking at options for indoor outdoor flow. We developed a plan to maximize outdoor access and minimize the budget’s impact by meeting with a general contractor and draftsman to explore various options and price points.
Next Steps:
- Meet with Experts: Talk to a general contractor and draftsman to develop a plan.
- Set a Budget: Determine your budget and explore ways to save.
By breaking each requirement down into smaller steps and checklists you’ll be ready to tackle your own project with confidence!
Coastal Dining Rooms: Design Development
For the best possible outcome, consider the possible consequences each decision may have upon the adjoining spaces. It’s a great idea to store your original inspiration documents, finish samples, and photos of products you are contemplating in a portable file folder or storage box. Include photographs of each of the surrounding spaces and the view from your windows.
Visualize Dining Room Furniture Using a Room Planner App
For this project, we selected finishes, flooring, lighting, and furnishings, and then updated a 3D model of the room and adjoining spaces using a Room Planner App. This allowed us to display each of the finishes and proposed updates, making it much easier for our clients to visualize the changes and make informed decisions.
Our Top 10 Design Checklist:
- Bring the outdoors in: Install oversized sliding glass doors to connect the dining room to the backyard. This will encourage frequent visits to the backyard and create a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors.
- Remove walls, not possibilities: Remove the wall between the kitchen and dining room to visually enlarge the space and increase dining comfort. Use a flush beam approach rather than incorporating an exposed beam required when removing a load-bearing wall.
- Add depth of field with openings: Create a generous opening (walk through) in a shared wall to add visual interest. This will also help to create a sense of flow between spaces.
- Low-maintenance flooring: Install flooring with a darker hue (resembles cliffs at a nearby beach) that complements the barely-there finishes found throughout the dining room. Choose a material that is easy to clean and maintain.
- Layered lighting: Build in layers of dimmable task lights and add sparkle with luscious lighting fixtures. Place fixtures at least 30” – 36” above the dining room table to create the illusion of increased room dimensions.
- Color Palette: Use a harmonious color palette (light blue is lovely) that resembles the sea and sand.
- Walls: Paint walls and trim with shades of white to create a backdrop for your art pieces.
- Dining Room Furniture: Ditch the oversized dining table that’s overwhelming the room! Replace it with a perfectly scaled, rattan-wrapped, hardwood table that adds warmth and texture. This simple swap will make the room feel larger and more inviting.
- Dining Chairs: Select dining chairs with a low profile that can be pushed in flush against the table’s edge to visually enlarge the space. Otherwise you will have 6 – 8 unwanted focal points (back of chairs).
- Dining Room Accessories and Finishing Touches: Add polished gold and silver hardware or accessories that reflect light along with pops of black accents for a modern twist.
