You’ll need to choose the best finish for your project. Each type of paint has its advantages. Latex paint is beneficial for its rapid drying time and ease of cleanup, while oil-based paint offers a smoother application and greater durability.
Selecting a high-quality primer will go a long way to ensure a better paint application.
Choosing the best tools for your existing cabinets project include brushes, wood filler, a putty knife, a paint brush, a foam roller, sanding blocks, tack cloth, and a paint stick or two.
Preparation: Ensure Flat Surfaces when Removing Cabinet doors
Preparation is critical to achieve a smoother finish. This means:
- Remove everything from your cabinets and store away from the kitchen
- Remove Cabinet doors
- Clean the cabinets to remove grease, grime, and dust
- Sand the surfaces to get a smooth and even finish. It is also worthwhile to use a tack cloth to remove sanding dust
- Before you start painting your cabinets, make sure to prime them for better paint adherence. Also, take the time to use wood filler to repair any small chips or cracks, and finish off with a light sanding where needed.
Painting: Cabinet Door and Cabinet Frames
Now that your cabinets are prepped, it’s time to paint. Remember to:
- Use the proper painting techniques, thin coats, and even strokes. Painting cabinet doors while they are still hung can save space and time.
- Do allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next coat.
- Please wear protective gear and only work in a highly ventilated area.
- Consider the pros and cons of using spray paint versus traditional brush techniques; spray paint can provide a smoother finish but requires specific equipment and masks for protection.
- Recent innovations in products and techniques have made it easier and more efficient to paint cabinets, ensuring durability and a less messy process.
PRO TIP: and paint with the wood grain to hide brush strokes and get a smooth finish.
Fresh Paint and Finishing Touches
The final step is to reassemble your cabinets and clean up. Be sure to:
- A cabinet painting project can take up to three weeks.
- Clean cabinet doors, cabinet frame, and hidden hinges, and hardware
- Reattach cabinet hardware and all the cabinet doors
- Clean up any spills or drips
- Touch up any areas that need it
By following these key steps, you’ll be well on your way to a beautifully painted kitchen cabinet finish. In the next section, we’ll further explore the key tips for success.
Section 2: New Paint Job Prep Work = Success!
As Benjamin Franklin said “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”. This is so true when it comes to a big project like painting your kitchen cabinets. Preparation is key and there’s many layers to it. Follow these tips to ensure your cabinet painting project goes well. Attention to detail and technique is key to success. Follow our tips below and you’ll be on your way to a great cabinet painting project.
Cabinet Doors Prep Work is Imperative
Let’s begin.
- Remove all cabinetry hardware and wash the cabinets with a degreaser to get remove of grease and grime.
- Next, sand the surfaces to achieve a smooth finish, gradually blending out any rough edges.
Use High-Quality Materials
Invest in good paint, brushes, and primers—poorly made paint and supplies are simply wasteful (of your time and investment). Consider consulting professionals at a paint store to choose the most suitable paints for kitchen cabinets. Choose good-quality paint, brushes, and rollers for a smooth finish.
Paint Job: Ventilation is Crucial
Make sure your workspace is well-ventilated so you don’t inhale fumes and the paint dries evenly. Open windows, use fans and wear a respirator to protect yourself from fumes. Good ventilation will also prevent paint from drying too slowly or unevenly.
Thin Coats are the Ideal Application Strategy
Apply thin, even coats of paint and let each coat dry completely before applying the next. This will prevent drips, unevenness, and a rough finish. It’s better to apply multiple thin coats than one thick coat.
Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets – Label Everything!
Save time and frustration by labeling the doors, drawers, and hardware (including hinges) and location, to make reassembly a breeze. Use a label maker to identify which hardware goes to which door or drawer. I will guarantee that this step alone will be a game-changer. By approaching your project with a strategic mindset, you can get a good cabinet finish that enhances your kitchen. It’s all about being precise and paying attention to detail, from color selection to final application.
Section 3: Don’t Do This
When painting kitchen cabinets, it’s easy to make mistakes that can result in a poor finish or even safety hazards. Avoid these mistakes to get a smooth painting process and a perfect finish:
Cabinet Doors: Don’t Skip the Primer
Primer helps the paint adhere better and gives a smoother finish. It is crucial to prime each cabinet door to ensure better paint adherence. The paint will peel, flake, or show uneven color without primer. Always prime your cabinets before painting, especially if you’re using a dark color or covering a light color.
Paint Job: Don’t Overload the Brushes
Too much paint on your brush will result in drips, uneven coverage, and a rough finish. Load your brush with the right amount of paint and work in small sections to maintain even coverage.
Please Do Not Ignore Safety Precautions
When painting, please do prioritize your safety. Before starting, make sure to purchase and wear the protective gear designed for your specific project. Additionally, working in a well-ventilated area is also incredibly important to your health and the health of your household
- Safety gear will help to minimize health risks (we could write an entire blog post on this topic alone!).
- Be sure to wear gloves to protect your skin from stains and chemicals, safety glasses to shield your eyes from splatters, and a mask or respirator to protect your respiratory system.
- Work in a well-ventilated area to prevent fume buildup.
Cabinet Doors – More to avoid:
- .Make sure to sand the cabinets properly – Allow the paint to dry completely between coats.
- .Remove hardware before painting.
- Test the paint and finish before applying it to your cabinetry.
- How to Store and Dispose of Paint Properly: Lowe’s and Home Depot offer insightful paint storage tips and paint disposal suggestions. Please read for helpful ideas.
By keeping these points in mind, you’ll enjoy the benefits including a much smoother process from start to finish!
Section 4: Choosing Your Cabinet Paint Color or Finish
Choosing the right paint color or finish for your kitchen cabinets involves considering the overall look and flow of your kitchen and surrounding areas. Here’s what to consider:
Visual Flow:
- How will the color and finish affect the visual flow between your kitchen and surrounding areas, including your outdoor spaces?
- Try to create a look that ties all visible spaces together.
Color:
How will the color work with natural light, countertops, flooring, and other design elements?
Use a color that bridges the indoor and outdoor gap.
Cabinet Door Finish:
- Choose a finish that suits your lifestyle and look.
- Durable finish
- Gloss finish
- Fully Cure
- All the Surfaces
- Water-based paint
Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets: Consult a Designer or Decorator
A professional can help you create a color scheme that connects your kitchen and surrounding areas.
They can also guide you in choosing a finish that suits your style and needs.
For example, we helped a client in a recent project by choosing a new cabinet color and finish for their kitchen. The existing finish was a lovely color but created a focal point at the sliding door, visually ending the space and separating it from the outdoor area. We designed a new visual endpoint using a hue similar to the overall pool color for the base cabinets and a creamy white for the upper cabinets.
Visually Expands the Home’s Spaciousness
The eye is now drawn to the end of the pool, expanding the kitchen footprint and blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors. We recommended a new tile matching the concrete hue to enhance the illusion of a larger, more cohesive space.
Section 5: Life Disruption: How to Manage Painting Kitchen Cabinets
Painting kitchen cabinets will disrupt your daily life, especially in a busy household. Here’s how to manage the disruption and make it smoother:
Wet Paint – Planning Ahead
Do Set Up a Temporary Kitchen: Setting up a Set temporary kitchen, (a mobile cart will do) in another area of your home. Use portable appliances like microwaves, mini-fridges, and toaster ovens to minimize the disruption.
Meal Planning: If possible, plan meals that require minimal cooking or can be cooked outside the kitchen. Ideally, prepare simple meals that don’t need a full kitchen setup, like salads, sandwiches, or slow-cooker meals. To reduce kitchen project stress, consider purchasing disposable plates and utensils to minimize dishwashing and cleanup.
Protecting Surfaces: Protecting Surfaces: Cover countertops, appliances, and floors with tarps or drop clothes to protect them from dust, paint splatters, and spills. Do secure the coverings with painter’s tape so they don’t move during the project. Protecting your kitchen surfaces will go a long way to minimize damage cleanup.
Timing the Project
Choosing the Right Time: Schedule your kitchen cabinet painting project during a less busy time, like a vacation, holiday break, or long weekend. This way, you can minimize the disruption to your daily activities and focus on the project without the stress of juggling it with your busy schedule.
Phased Approach: If possible, paint the cabinets in phases rather than all at once. Paint the cabinet boxes and frames first, and keep the cabinet doors and drawers separate. This phased approach will give you some functionality in the kitchen during the project, so you can use some parts of the kitchen while others are being painted.
Managing Household Activities
Work Zone: Designate an area in your home as the work zone for painting cabinets. This zone should be well-ventilated, well-lit, and away from high-traffic areas. A work zone will keep the mess contained and minimize the disruption to the rest of your home.
Communication with Household Members: Inform all household members about the painting schedule and the temporary kitchen setup. Communication will help everyone understand the changes and cooperate to minimize the disruption. Assign specific tasks to family members to help prepare, organize, and clean up.
Child and Pet Safety: Keep children and pets away from the work zone by simply keeping doors closed and/or baby gate. Paint fumes and chemicals can be harmful, so prioritize safety by keeping vulnerable household members out of the work area.
