Kids Room Floor Plan

What should every kids room have?

1

Kids Room Decorating Ideas

As we turn the key and step inside the sanctuary that is your child’s room, imagine a space that blooms alongside them, tailored to evolve as they do. Imagine a floor plan that, while just right today, can quickly adapt as your child’s needs change. Let’s dream up a kid-friendly floor plan that will have your child thriving. Envision a layout that will enhance every corner of the room. Here’s how we can shape it:

Bedroom Floor Plan

  • Needs / Purpose: Consider your child’s age and needs. What do they need their room for? Will they use it for playing, studying, sleeping or all of the above? How long do you plan on living in the home?
  • Zones: Arrange the furniture in a way that creates distinct activity zones. This will help your child focus on the task and avoid distractions. For example, you could create a sleeping zone, a play zone, and a study zone.
  • Go Vertical! Install floor-to-ceiling built-ins. Use built-ins to store clothes, toys, books, and other belongings. The floor-to-ceiling storage will help keep your child’s room tidy and organized, promoting a good night’s sleep.
  • Budget friendly: Determining your budget early in the planning process will help you make informed decisions about the materials, furniture, and finishes you use. For example, investing in an entire wall, floor-to-ceiling storage may be worthwhile if you plan to live in your home for a few years.

Kids Room Traffic Flow

When arranging furniture in a child’s room, consider the traffic flow. Make sure that there is enough space for your child to move around comfortably. Leave at least 3 feet of clearance between the bed and the door and at least 2 feet of clearance between the bed, desk area and any other furniture. This will allow your child to move freely and prevent accidental injuries. Consider placing the bed in a quiet corner of the room. This will help your child to get a good night’s sleep. Place the desk near a window. This will give your child natural light and a view to enjoy while working. [Read: 11 Kids Bathroom Ideas: Chic Tips for a Stylish and Practical Space]

Kids Bedroom Themes

Crafting the right theme for your child’s bedroom can be as delightful as composing a beautiful melody for a song. It opens the door to a meaningful experience you and your child can share. With a strong floor plan (Step 1) you can decorate a bedroom that your child will love for years to come.

A well-designed theme can transform the most ordinary room into a vibrant and inviting space. Pops of color can liven up a room, infusing it with energy and personality. It’s a small change that makes a big difference. And, of course, you don’t have to go all out.

A neutral base is a great way to create a bedroom that is both stylish and versatile. Neutral colors, such as white, gray, and beige, are easy to work with and can be easily coordinated with other colors and patterns. This makes it easy to change the look of the bedroom without having to repaint the walls or replace major pieces of furniture.

Bedroom Ideas

Maybe your child can’t stop talking about surfing or skateboarding. They might dream about outer space. They could be the biggest fan at game time or even a budding fashionista. Whatever their interests are, we have bedroom ideas and themes that are sure to win them over. The decorating journey continues once you’ve found the optimal theme for your child’s room.

Bedroom Ideas – Theme Description for 3 Design Concepts

  • Boho Bliss: Embrace the free-spirited, eclectic aesthetic of bohemian style. Think about warm earthy colors, natural materials like rattan or bamboo, and plenty of textures. Add whimsical touches with macramé wall hangings, a canopy over the bed, or an assortment of plush throw pillows.

Choosing Bedroom Colors

What colors are calming for kids bedroom?

3

Kids Room Decorating Ideas

Now, let’s invite color to the party. The hues you choose for your child’s room do more than meet the eye – they stir emotions, shape energy levels, and even sweeten dreams. Imagine a soothing sanctuary bathed in soft blues, gentle greens, and understated pastels. Think “cloudless sky” on a calm morning that’s a whisper of an amusing blue. Coupled with neutral tones, it creates a calm, harmonious canvas, channeling the understated sophistication of the East Coast.

Kids Room Paint Ideas

Or, suppose your little explorer is captivated by the wildlife. Why not welcome nature’s palette into their kingdom? Introduce shades of mischievous squirrel brown, vibrant meadow green, and the pure white of a swift-running deer. Combine animal prints on the bedding with a rug featuring their favorite critter, and voila! You’ve set the stage for endless adventures in their very own wildlife haven.

Child’s Room

Talking about paint ideas, whether your heart beats for East Coast elegance, West Coast cool, or an entirely personal palette, the goal is to sprinkle colors that infuse vitality and character into the entire room. Think accent pillows showcasing lush tropical foliage or introducing the vivacious spirit of coastal regions into your child’s retreat. The color splashes create a chilled-out atmosphere.

A black-and-white bedroom may strike the right chord for children interested in music, Star Wars, or a cherished memorabilia collection. A dual-toned theme with white walls creates a gallery-like atmosphere, showcasing their unique flair. Themed cushions or a guitar hanging on a pristine white wall places their hobbies center stage.

As your child grows into their teen years, their room should echo their maturing tastes. Think cool grays paired with a muted palette of blues and perhaps a sophisticated dash of burgundy. This evolved palette can spill over into their bedding, curtains, wall art, and study space, creating an environment that encourages relaxation and focus.

Bedroom Color

In your quest for the ideal room, discover fun, playful wall decor in primary colors that spark creativity in younger children, encouraging play and learning. And don’t overlook kid-friendly elements like a hot pink sitting area or chalkboard wall ideas, the perfect examples of spaces that foster joy and self-expression.

Color is the conductor of a harmonious design orchestra, whether your style is East Coast chic, West Coast relaxed, or somewhere in between. Every child’s room holds the promise of a delightful color symphony waiting to be composed. It is about creating an environment that your child feels comfortable in, cozy, and secure, and that becomes a springboard for a wonderful future. And now, the stage is set. By honoring your child’s preferences and blending in color psychology, you’ll create a room that’s more than a place to sleep – it is a sanctuary filled with treasured memories and future dreams.

Paint Colors for Bedrooms

Blue Hue

Imagine a soft, powder blue that fills the rooms with a calming embrace, like floating on fluffy clouds. In contrast, picture an electric blue or royal blue hue that zooms into the kids’ room like a sleek race car. Next – a stylish deep navy blue adds an air of elegance and serenity, reminiscent of a starry night sky.

Emerald Green, Mint Green

Picture a soft, mint green that wraps them in a calming embrace, like being surrounded by a peaceful oasis. In contrast, envision a bright lime green that sparks their creativity and energizes their space, like a splash of refreshing citrus. Now visualize a deep emerald green that conveys tranquility, like a forest or a mountaintop.

Lavender & Pink Color Shades

Picture a delicate blush pink enveloping their room with a gentle, dreamy ambiance, like a soft, cotton candy cloud. As an alternative, envision a vibrant fuchsia pink bursting with energy and excitement, infusing the space with a playful and lively spirit. Next, imagine a lavender shade that radiates tranquility like a lavender field in full bloom.

Kids Room Furniture

How to choose furniture for kids room?

You’ve planned, chosen a colorful, fun theme, and splashed on the colors. Now, let’s dress up the room with the stars of the show – the furniture. They do more than elevate the room’s style – they also provide comfort and safety.

Involving your child in the furniture selection process can be a great opportunity for them to express their creativity and form a bond with their space. Opt for furniture that can grow with your child, offering longevity and supporting sustainable choices. This approach not only adds a personal touch but also helps cultivate a room that truly feels like their own.

  • Bed: In the quest for the perfect bed, think beyond the traditional. For instance, a space-saving single bed or daybed offers versatility, doubling as a comfy reading spot during the day. Smaller rooms require a bit of design strategy. A loft bed with a desk underneath or a storage bench that serves as a bedside table can work wonders in utilizing space effectively.
  • Got two sharing a room? Consider a creative bed layout. Placing two twin beds in an L-shape in the corner opens the room, freeing up floor space for playtime and more.
  • Low loft: Another exciting choice is a low loft bed with high and sturdy rails, offering an adventurous play area below and a cozy sleeping space above.

Bedroom Desk

  • Play area / Bedroom Desk: Designing your child’s room means preparing for change. The study area, in particular, needs to be as flexible as your growing child. It starts as a lively play area, a sanctuary for toys and imagination, and soon transitions into a place for focus and learning as they embark on their educational journey. This transformation often calls for new furniture, like an adjustable-height desk and chair, ensuring comfort and productivity. Carefully crafting this space can significantly boost your child’s academic performance, enrich their learning experience, and support their overall development.

Kids Room Decorating Ideas

Storage: Let’s talk about organization- the secret to a tidy room. Choose sturdy chests and wardrobes to store everything from toys to teenage essentials safely. Place these strategically to keep different zones in the room clutter-free. More about storage in Step 5.

Bedroom Corner: Cozy corners in the room are ideal relaxation and daydreaming spots for all age groups. We love plush chairs and oversized floor cushions that add a playful touch for the younger set. For older kids and teenagers, bean bags from popular brands like Fatboy or Big Joe, along with plush papasan chairs, provide a winning combination of style and comfort.

Furniture Safety: Of course, safety is always paramount (hence the proverbial bunk bed discussion). Be sure to avoid furnishings with sharp edges and securely anchor any heavy pieces to the wall. And choose non-toxic, hypoallergenic materials that are easy to clean. Finally, let’s add a dash of personality to the room. Choosing the right furniture balances style, function, and safety. With these tips in mind, you’re all set to create a space that’s visually appealing and a safe, cozy place for your child to dream, learn, and play.

Kids Storage

How can I organize my room for kids?

5

Kids Room Decorating Ideas

Imagine walking into your child’s room, not to see a chaotic toy storm but rather an enchanting haven of color, joy, and order. A space where every item has a home and every corner invites a new adventure. A room where imaginative play is encouraged, and so too is the importance of tidiness and organization. This dear reader, is the promise of thoughtful design and storage in a child’s room. Here, we unveil organizational tips, from the tried and true to the whimsical and new.

Floor to Ceiling Cabinetry

  • Built-in storage, extending from the floor to the ceiling, including a cleverly organized closet, can really be an investment in a kid’s room. [Read: Baby Closet Organization]
  • To maximize vertical space, you can store daily items on lower shelves and less-used items on higher shelves. Best of all, they’re built to adapt as your child grows, meaning the shelves holding stuffed animals today could be home to schoolbooks tomorrow.
  • So, investing in built-in storage is about laying a foundation for an adaptable, clutter-free, and aesthetically pleasing space that grows with your child.
  • Toy Rotation: Implement a toy rotation system for a clean, engaging play space. Use the upper cabinet space (floor to ceiling storage) to store the toys. [Read: Kids Room Toy Storage]

Interior Designer Tips – Bedroom Ideas

  • Go Vertical: Use floating shelves, pegboards, and wall-hanging pockets.
  • Zoning: Establish dedicated zones for different activities, complete with practical and accessible storage.
  • Multifunctional Furniture: Choose beds with built-in drawers, desks doubling as dressing tables or window seats with surrounding bookshelves.
  • Under-Bed boxes: Store seasonal clothing, bedding.
  • Over-the-door: Store underwear, socks or smaller items like craft supplies.
  • Wall Organizers: Employ flexible wall organizers for easy access to small toys or stationery.
  • Overhead Hanging Nets: Install overhead nets or hammocks for stuffed animals, saving space and adding a playful design touch.
  • Customizable Drawer Dividers: Use dividers for small items like socks or accessories.
  • Color-Coded System: Make organization easier by color-coding storage for each type of toy or activity.
  • Clear Containers and Labels: Use transparent boxes to make organization fun.

Kids Room Decorating Ideas

Imagine a room that adapts to your child’s tastes. Begin with a classic base, like beige or soft grey. This flexible palette lets their evolving passions shine. A space-themed room eventually becomes band posters. Or, a Lego collection morphs into vintage records. Their room transforms with them.

The idea is to boost creativity with decor that matures as they do. You can display their finger-painted artwork today and, well, tomorrow – it might be a science fair poster. Or, a photo collage (taking center stage) captures their concert memories. A corkboard shows off their pin collection, and each colorful piece tells its story.

Kid’s Room Decor

Let your child steer the decorating process. They could pick fairy lights for a reading corner. Maybe they’ll select a sleek desk for their digital design work. They might arrange their skateboard collection just so. Or decide on a chic makeup organizer. Their choices bring the room to life.

Floor cushions, whether Moroccan-style from World Market or tufted options from Urban Outfitters, offer flexible seating solutions that cater to all age groups.

Customizing their room is a balancing act. A patterned rug adds a pop of color, while a monochrome lamp brings cool sophistication. The room balances inspiration, happiness, and calm. Let’s create a sanctuary that evolves with them. A room that captures their growth sparks expression and houses cherished memories.

Better Sleep

How to sleep better at night naturally.

Kids Room Decorating Ideas

Kids Room Decorating Ideas

Now that you have thoughtfully curated your child’s room (in the first 6 steps), let’s turn our attention to products that promote quality sleep. Picture your child’s room as a nurturing cocoon where darkness takes center stage. Creating a sleep sanctuary for your child is necessary for their well-being and development. Consider the following:

  • Blackout Drapes and Shades: According to Dr. Phyllis Zee Circadian and Sleep Medicine at Northwestern University, exposure to excessive light in the bedroom can disrupt sleep patterns and affect sleep quality in children (NPR). Installing blackout drapes can help create a dark and peaceful environment, promoting better sleep.

Mattress & Bedding

  • Upgraded Mattress: According to sleep experts, children’s bodies undergo rapid growth and development during sleep, and a supportive mattress is essential for proper spinal alignment and healthy growth (Sleep Foundation.org). Look for mattresses that offer the right balance of support and comfort, like the Kids Purple Mattress, designed for growing children.
  • Comfortable Bedding: Opt for high-quality bedding from breathable fabrics, such as 100% cotton or bamboo. These materials promote airflow, keeping your child cool and comfortable throughout the night. Look for bedding sets like Simply Organic Bamboo’s Sheet Set, which offers comfort and breathability.
  • Allergy Prevention Measures: Dust mites are a common allergen that can disrupt sleep and trigger allergy symptoms in children. Consider a washable mattress encasing, such as The Company Store’s Organic Cotton Allergy Mattress or Box Spring Protector. It can provide a protective barrier against dust mites, helping to reduce allergens in the sleep environment.
  • Supportive Pillows: Choose pillows that provide optimal support and comfort. Memory foam pillows, like The Company Store’s Serene or Neck Support Memory Foam Pillows, conform to your child’s head and neck, relieving pressure points and promoting proper spinal alignment. Alternatively, down alternative pillows, such as Lulu and Georgia’s Alpine Loft Medium Down Alternative Pillow, offer a soft and hypoallergenic option for children with allergies.
Meditation before bed for better sleep.

Sounds and Scents

  • Soothing Sounds Practices: Research has shown that incorporating relaxing sleep practices, such as sleep meditation or calming music, can improve sleep quality and relaxation in children (National Library of Medicine). Consider using sleep-related apps like the Headspace Meditation App, which offers guided sleep meditations designed specifically for children, or the Rest 2nd gen by Hatch. This intelligent sound machine provides a variety of sleep-inducing sounds, stories, and dreamscapes.
  • Soothing Scents: Aromatherapy can be a wonderful addition to the sleep routine. Generally speaking, a diffuser with essential oils is known for calming properties. Oils such as lavender or chamomile, to create a soothing and relaxing ambiance.

By incorporating these steps and selecting sleep products backed by research and specific examples, you can create a sleep sanctuary that promotes better sleep quality, proper alignment, and overall well-being for your child. Restful nights and brighter mornings await!”

Safety Tips for Decorating Kid’s Rooms

How do I keep my child’s bedroom safe?

8

Kids Bedroom Safety Precautions

Creating a safe and secure environment for your child is of utmost importance. From their first giggle to their teenage years, their room should be a haven of safety and comfort. Above all, your diligent efforts can make all the difference. Whether installing a smoke detector, child-proofing furniture, or ensuring a clear path for easy exits.

Kid’s Bedroom

First thing to remember is that potential hazards are only sometimes evident, so a regular room check-up becomes crucial. Similarly, electrical safety demands equal attention in our digital age, with appropriate lighting, safe cord management, and careful outlet use. A safe window, door, and floor design can further prevent accidents. For our youngest, crib safety is paramount. However, this list is only a start. Please keep up with the best practices in child safety by consulting your child’s pediatrician.

  • Check all furnishings for loose or breakable parts and remove from the room.
  • Secure all furniture to the wall to prevent tipping, thus ensuring your child’s safety.
  • Ensure a clear path between the bed and door.

  • Opt for cool-to-the-touch bulbs for lamps and nightlights to prevent burn injuries.
  • Keep nightlights away from drapes or bedspreads to reduce fire risk.
  • Instill fire safety knowledge in children, including fire extinguisher use and escape strategies.

Window and Floor Safety

  • Install window guards or screens to prevent accidental falls.
  • Fit all windows with locks for added safety.
  • Keep the floor clear of clutter to prevent
  • Refrain from hanging items on the crib’s sides or corners to avoid strangulation risks.

Baby Nursery Safety

Be sure to keep the crib clear—no hanging items on its sides or corners, they’re a strangulation risk. For naptime or bedtime, remember to remove toys, pillows, and blankets. It’s a simple step for safer sleep. Also, it’s important to place the crib away from windows or window cords. These little changes can make a big difference in keeping your tiny one safe. Please remember this list is incomplete. Always consult your child’s pediatrician for updates and best practices in child safety.

Welcome! I’m Gigi Day, mom, designer and passionate believer in the transformative power of experiencing beauty (whatever that means to you) in your home. I’ve seen firsthand how a well designed home can change everything - how we feel, how we connect with others, how we live our lives. That’s why I created Mod Daily, a resource for anyone looking for inspiration and guidance to turn their house into a home that reflects who they are, what they value and what they love. My goal is to help you get the most out of your space so you can make memories, nurture relationships and live life beautifully.
